By nature, these awards will be made to candidates who demonstrate significant skill, and a very high level of proficiency and prowess in at least one of our major team sports. These pupils should ordinarily have played representative sport at a regional or national level, and will be expected to play a leading role in the sporting programme of the School. Sportsmanship and a tenacious approach are qualities which are highly regarded. Current or prospective pupils must meet the academic criteria.

11+ : Candidates sports abilities are taken into account when assessing the results of the 11+ entrance examinations and the award of Lower School Academic Awards.

13+ : Up to two Sports Awards may be made.

Sixth Form: Scholarships can be awarded to individuals on entry to the Sixth Form who demonstrate outstanding dedication and commitment to reach the highest level of performance. They are expected to set an example through motivating others to achieve their potential.

Application Procedure

Applications for 2010 close on 16 December 2009.

Candidates' skills will be assessed in the following manner:

  1. watching them play in a competitive situation (where possible);
  2. written references from their Headmaster, school coach, and regional or club coach;
  3. a visit to Abingdon on Tuesday 9 March 2010 when their skills and fitness will be assessed;
  4. an interview with the Director of Sport;
  5. a handwritten critical review (600-800 words) of a recent sporting performance he has witnessed, commenting on the skills of the players, the key moments of the contest, the key factors which may have affected the outcome and the background details of the sporting occasion;
  6. a formal interview with the Headmaster and Master of the Scholars.

Retention of the award will be dependent on consistently excellent performance levels, exemplary conduct during training and competition, and if appropriate to the sport concerned, evidence of good contribution to team spirit. It is given that they will be acting as role models for their peers and, as such, high levels of motivation and commitment to training and competition are expected.
