Sportsmanship and a tenacious approach are qualities which are highly regarded. Current or prospective pupils must meet the academic criteria.
13+: Up to two Sports Awards may be made.
Sixth Form: Scholarships can be awarded to individuals on entry to the Sixth Form who demonstrate outstanding dedication and commitment to reach the highest level of performance. They are expected to set an example through motivating others to achieve their potential.
Application Procedure
Applications for 2012 close on 14 December 2011.
Candidates' skills will be assessed in the following manner:
- watching them play in a competitive situation (where possible);
- written references from their Head, school coach, and regional or club coach;
- a visit to Abingdon on 13 March 2012 when their skills and fitness will be assessed;
- an interview with the Director of Sport;
- a handwritten critical review (600-800 words) of a recent sporting performance he has witnessed, commenting on the skills of the players, the key moments of the contest, the key factors which may have affected the outcome and the background details of the sporting occasion;
- a formal interview with the Head and Master of the Scholars.
Current Abingdon pupils in the Lower School, are assessed as part of the Physical Education programme. They are subsequently considered alongside external candidates during the assessment process. As such there is no formal application process, but those deemed to be worthy, will automatically be given an offer.
Retention of the award will be dependent on consistently excellent performance levels, exemplary conduct during training and competition, and if appropriate to the sport concerned, evidence of good contribution to team spirit. It is given that they will be acting as role models for their peers and, as such, high levels of motivation and commitment to training and competition are expected.
