What are we looking for?

A number of awards will be made annually to candidates who demonstrate significant skill, a very high level of proficiency and prowess in at least two of our core sports* and who show outstanding dedication and commitment to reach the highest level of performance. Particular consideration will be given to candidates who excel in rugby, hockey, rowing or cricket, although we welcome applicants who can demonstrate other sports in addition to these.

At third year (13+) entry, successful candidates should ordinarily have played representative sport at a regional or national level, and will be able to perform at a high level across three terms of sport. For Sixth Form (16+), sports scholarships are offered either for excellence in one sport (to at least regional level) or to a high level of school achievement in three terms of sport.

* Our core sports are currently athletics, badminton, cricket, cross-country, football, hockey, rowing, rugby, squash, swimming, tennis.

Scholars’ Programme

Sports scholars will be expected to play a key leadership role, both on and off the field, and in multiple sports. Our elite sportsmen are offered a tailored and age appropriate strength and conditioning programme, supported by our Head of Athletic Development.

They will be invited to participate in the scholars programme of lectures and dinners, as well as a separate programme of events and trips focused particularly on sport. There are also regular overseas competitive tours for our major sports, with previous trips including a rugby tour to Argentina and Chile, and a cricket tour to Barbados, as well as rowing training camps to France.

Our previous elite sportsmen have gone on to be selected for the England rugby squad; the England U20 cross-country team; have won prestigious rowing scholarships to top US universities; and represented their country in a variety of sports including cycling, kayaking and fencing.

The 13+ Assessment Process

Third Year (13+) applications are made via your son’s prep school. For internal students, the Teacher in Charge of Scholars and the Director of Sport will propose suitable candidates to the Head for consideration. Internal candidates will then follow the same assessment process as external applicants.

Candidates will be shortlisted to attend a day of assessments which includes observation of a competitive situation in their major sport, a skills assessment in their chosen sports and an all-round fitness test.
