The first six weeks of the Lent term have seen some challenging badminton fixtures. Abingdon students have played matches against Bromsgrove, Wellington and Harrow as well as sending two teams to the National Badminton Championships county round. Due to increased commitments to various other sports we have been fielding a wider number of players and it has been fantastic to see some of our younger students step up to the mark and compete for their school.

Abingdon has won two of their three friendly matches but all of them were very close. A mixture of our 1st and 2nd teams managed to beat Bromsgrove and Wellington but lost narrowly to Harrow. The Harrow game was extraordinarily close with teams drawing in matches 8-8 but losing on total games 12-11.

In the National Championships Oxfordshire round we entered a 3rd year team and a mixed 4th and 5th year team. Both teams came second in their age categories and received silver medals. The 3rd years came top of their group but lost in the final to a very strong side from Cherwell. The Middle School boys faced strong competition from Wood Green School who went on to win the competition. Abingdon missed out on the top spot by just 3 points.

As we move into the second half of the lent term we look forward to our remaining fixtures. We have a 4th and 5th year match against Harrow, a good opportunity to address the recent loss, as well as a rematch against Cheltenham which will hopefully see a convincing Abingdon victory.

The highlight of the term will undoubtedly be the Wellington Quad. We will play Eton, Harrow and Wellington in what is always a hotly contested tournament.
