It was wonderful to welcome back several OAs for the annual Abingdon School Old Chorister Association evensong which took place in the school Chapel on Friday. Despite the early stage of term, the combined choir was in fine voice as a full choral evensong took place, led by the chaplain, Rev’d Paul Gooding. The service opened with Finzi’s triumphant ‘Let us praise famous men’ before the more subtle and reflective singing of the responses and psalm took place. The canticles were Noble’s evening setting in B Minor whilst Wesley’s Blessed be the God and Father was a popular choice for the anthem – this is an anthem which is very much liked amongst both the recent OAs and current choir members and was indeed, the anthem performed by the choir at Westminster Abbey earlier in the year. This was a wonderful opportunity to share in music making alongside allowing our ten OAs to return to a place where many cherished school memories were made. The Music Department is certainly grateful for the OA impact in music over the recent past and it is hoped with this new Old Chorister Association, that continued links with the OA body will continue.
