Sports Scholarships

Sports Awards for entry in September 2019

A number of awards will be made annually to candidates who demonstrate significant skill, a very high level of proficiency and prowess in at least one of our major sports and who demonstrate outstanding dedication and commitment to reach the highest level of performance.

Successful candidates should ordinarily have played representative sport at a regional or national level, will be expected to play a leading role in the sporting programme of the School and to set an example through motivating others to achieve their potential.

Awards are made to candidates at 13+ entry (Third Year) and upon entry to the Sixth form.

At 13+ the School is seeking to award sports scholarships for a high level of school achievement in three terms of sport. We believe that at this stage of a scholar's development exposure to many sports is beneficial - although we appreciate that he may excel in one and be very good at others. We would expect the equivalent of A team representation in each term.

At 16+ the School is seeking to award a sports scholarship either for excellence in one sport or a high level of school achievement in three terms of sport. If the application is related to one sport then it is an expectation that the student would be performing at the equivalent level to regional representation. If the application is considered across the three terms then A team representation is a requirement in each term.

All sports scholars are expected to:

  • meet the expectations of all School team training sessions
  • spend additional time with the Head of Athletic Development in the fitness suite
  • be available to represent the School as appropriate, except where the Director of Sport has approved absence in order for the athlete to play at a higher level e.g. National level.

For external candidates the winning of a sports award does not in itself secure a boy entry to the school; he must also meet the academic requirements for entrance in a separate examination appropriate to his age group.

Internal candidates will be invited to participate by the Head following consultation with the Sports and PE Department.

The Director of Sport and Physical Education, Mr Peter Bignell, welcomes informal contact with potential candidates by emailing pete.bignell@abingdon.org.uk.

All awards are reviewed annually, and are subject to satisfactory academic progress and behaviour. Continued tenure of Sports awards will be at the discretion of the Head of Department, and dependant upon excellent performance levels, exemplary conduct during training and competition, and if appropriate to the sport concerned, evidence of good contribution to team spirit.

The Scholarship carries an entitlement to a nominal fee remission of £300 per year. However, as is the case for all pupils, there is an option to apply for further financial assistance through a means-tested bursary.
