Despite the cold start to the new year nearly 200 boys took part in the pre-season football program utilising the fantastic playing facilities at Tilsley Park.

Over three days of training all age groups were put through their paces in field sessions, whilst also developing their understanding of sports nutrition in workshops led by Oxford United Nutritionist Jasmine Campbell. Once again Wayne Brown, Head Goalkeeping Coach at Oxford United was on hand to put the keepers through their paces.

Off the back of a 4-4 draw on Friday evening against the Old Abingdonians Returning Captain’s XI, the 1st XI finished their pre-season program with games against St Edward’s and Malvern College. Whilst there is still a lot of work to be done, some flowing football saw Huw Williams nod home from close range on two occasions against St Edward’s, 3-0 the final score. Against Malvern, Huw Williams latched onto a direct penetrating through ball to give Abingdon an early lead, however a tired and scrappy second half saw the game finish 1-1.

A busy five-day period with a lot of hard work across the board, and the Football Club now looks forward to a full block against Haileybury next Saturday.
