The final week of the football season got underway with the annual lower school fixtures against Abingdon Prep. Having played a shorted fixture earlier in the year the U13s continued their great run with the As winning 3-1 and the Bs 11-3. The U12 As lost a narrow game 4-6 whilst the U12 Bs won a cracker 5-4.
On Thursday, having previously had the fixture cancelled twice due to the weather, the U16 As secured a 3-1 win over MCS under the floodlights at Tilsley Park.
Prior to the last block fixture of the season Abingdon welcomed Oxford United Assistant Manager Derek Fazackerley as the special guest at the Abingdon School Football Club Dinner. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and the players left with a great message of resilience through life. Players were also rewarded for their individual and team efforts throughout the course of the season.
Saturday morning, and the last fixtures of the season against St John's Leatherhead. The lower school sides secured a clean sweep of wins scoring 26 goals across the 4 games played. Between them, the U13s have won 16 of their 19 games this year. The middle school sides came up against tough opposition but the U14 Cs secured a 2-0 win whilst the U15 Cs were victorious 2-1. A 2-2 draw saw the U15 Bs finish the season unbeaten, a terrific effort from all involved. The U16s fought hard, and will feel that in the A team fixture, on other occasions, could have got more from the game.
Moving to the senior games, and despite suffering defeats the 5th, 4th and 3rd XIs should be proud of their efforts whilst on Waste Court the 2nd XI secured a terrific 2-0 win. Having gone 0-1 down early on, the 1st XI found themselves backs to the wall, however after settling into the game they were 2-1 up shortly after half time. Sam Warren and Joe Lilley the goal scorers. A further goal from Oise Emafo gave the Abingdon side a 3-1 lead, however unfortunately the side struggled to hold on against good opposition, having to settle for a 3-3 draw.
This brings to a close a thoroughly enjoyable season, and whilst the weather did its best to try and dampen the spirits, over 150 games were played with over 450 goals scored.
