Biology

Biology is an exploding subject! Recent advances in DNA technology and molecular science have transformed the subject. The department believes in the educational value of biology over and above its value as a preparation for a career. Our aim is to make our students aware of the exciting possibilities and send them out well qualified, informed and enthusiastic about Biology. We believe biology, along with the other sciences is an integral part of a liberal, modern education.

The teaching and learning of the biological sciences should generate enthusiasm in four major fields:

  1. Natural history, ecology and conservation, encouraging curiosity and seeking patterns of life.
  2. Experimentation - the desire and expertise to probe nature by designing and executing experiments.
  3. Natural philosophy - seeking to offer explanations of biological phenomena by creating hypotheses and generalisations, developing ideas and attempting to apply concepts in new situations.
  4. Recombinant DNA and cloning technology - to promote an understanding of the capabilities of, and an appreciation of the moral and ethical issues raised by, this rapidly growing field of modern biology.

The department has a record of excellent results at all levels and especially in gaining places to Oxbridge. For Sixth formers the Biology Society holds lectures two or three times a term.

The department has four teaching laboratories, a green house and a pond. There are seven teachers of biology, supported by technicians.
