Abingdon launches First World War online archive

On 28 June 1914, one hundred years ago tomorrow, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated in Sarajevo; the event led directly to the outbreak of the First World War thirty-seven days later. To mark the centenary of the war, in which 75 members of the Abingdon community died, the School has launched a website of its First World War archive collection. You can now search the pages of the wartime editions of The Abingdonian, see letters and photographs of the dead sent in by their families, turn the pages of the hand-amended Roll of Service and see for yourselves the impact of the war on this very small school, which in September 1914 only had 75 pupils.
