Abingdon Careers Convention: Friday, 17 March 2017, 7:00-9:00pm, Abingdon School

The annual Abingdon Independent Schools’ Careers Convention, jointly run by Abingdon School, Our Lady’s Abingdon and St Helen and St Katharine, will be on Friday 17 March 2017, 7:00-9:00pm at Abingdon School. 5th Year, L6 and U6 students will not want to miss this event! Already, nearly 90 parents and alumni of the three schools (representing some 75 different careers – more than many commercial career fairs!) have volunteered to serve as ‘career representatives’. This is a rare opportunity for students to gather information about careers of interest and educational routes into those careers from people who know. The format of the event is that of a careers fair, with students choosing and joining small discussion groups led by career representatives. Concurrent with the career fair will be two panel presentations by experts, one called 'What employers seek: Preparing yourself for the future job market' (focusing on what employers look for when recruiting for entry level roles) and one called 'Emerging careers: New careers you may never have heard of before' (focusing on five emergent industries including Cyber Security, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Renewable Energy, BioMaterials, and Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems). The event is compulsory for 5th year students; all 6th form students are invited to attend voluntarily.  And parents are welcome, too; no booking is necessary.

eSafety Talk – from Mark Hindley, Deputy Head (Pastoral)

Just a reminder that we have a joint talk on eSafety with SHSK parents on Tuesday 31 January. Karl Hopwood will be at SHSK in the morning talking to the girls, and then here at Abingdon with the boys in the afternoon.  He is one of the country's leading experts on eSafety and online trends among students, and I would encourage as many parents as possible to attend his talk.  As ever, I think alignment between parents and school on these issues is critical. SHSK have kindly offered to host the parents' session which will start at 7pm.

Mock exam results

5th year mock exam results were posted to the parent portal on Wednesday and an email regarding them was sent to all 5th year parents at the same time.  If you are having trouble accessing the portal please contact [email protected].
