Message from the Headmaster
Dear Parents
At times, it is hard to keep pace with events at Abingdon and this has certainly been a packed week. Our cricketers have enjoyed fixtures against Eton and the MCC before their block against MCS on Saturday, while Lower School pupils enjoyed a joint tournament with SHSK. Thirteen Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award groups navigated around the Marlborough Downs while their canoeing counterparts made their way down the River Medway. Our 360 event last night gave the Lower Sixth valuable insights into university applications and opportunities, while there were outings for students studying History, English and Biology.
A more arcane feature of the week was the fact that it was Insect Week, coordinated by the Biology department. As a treat, Mr Whitworth, Head of Biology, brought some edible insects into the Staff Common Room to supplement the usual snacks. Grasshoppers, dried mealworms and roasted crickets aren’t the most usual accompaniment to a cup of coffee but the crickets were surprisingly tasty.
Looking ahead, I’m looking forward to welcoming Leavers and Prizewinners to Prize Giving in the Amey Theatre at 11am tomorrow, preceded by the Leavers’ service in St Michael’s Church on Park Road at 9.30am. There will be drinks and refreshments in the garden of Lacies Court after the ceremony, though I think we’ll stick to more conventional snacks…
Best wishes, Mike Windsor

- Box Office:
- Art – Thursday 30 June and Friday 1 July at 7pm. Serge has bought a modern painting for a huge sum of money. Marc hates it and cannot believe that a friend of his could possibly want such a work. Yvan attempts, unsuccessfully, to placate both sides. If your friendship is based on tacit mutual agreement what happens when one person does something completely different and unexpected? Dylan, Hugo and Will are putting on a performance of Art this June as the performance aspect for their artefact EPQ. We hope you enjoy it.
- NT Live: Prima Facie – Thursday 21 July at 7pm. Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) makes her West End debut in the UK premiere of Suzie Miller’s award-winning play. Tessa is a young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working class origins to be at the top of her game; defending; cross examining and winning. An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge.
