Registration – from Mark Hindley (Deputy Head Pastoral)

As I am sure you will all appreciate, registration is crucial to the safe, efficient running of the school, as well as being a legal requirement.  An email has been sent to every boy, reminding them of their duty to register every morning. (Indeed we are saying that if they forget to register more than once in any fortnight then they will be given a Friday Detention.) Please help us by:
(a) reinforcing the importance of this process;
(b) by reminding your son to register if for any reason he is late in;
(c) letting the Attendance Secretary know if your son is ill or absent: [email protected], 01235 849031

eLearning and ICT Evening for 2nd & 3rd Year parents – Monday 9 February, 7pm, Sports Hospitality Suite

Parents of 2nd and 3rd Year pupils are invited to come and hear how Abingdon are using technology in and around school, and discuss the opportunities and challenges that Abingdonians face in an ever connected world. Digital Literacy is a growing area of importance and touches on all aspects of a student's life.  With this in mind, Mr Hindley (Deputy Head Pastoral) will discuss the current understanding of how teenagers interact with personal devices, social media and being online, as well as what the school and parents can do to support them.  Mr Whitworth (Director of eLearning) will also demonstrate how technology is being promoted in and out of lessons, especially through the school's new study site (Firefly).

To all parents of 3rd year and Middle School Germanists

In order to gain a C+ at GCSE, you need to have good command of verbs and tenses as well as some variety in sentence structure and opinions.  We are running weekly sessions with clear instructions on how to improve. They require pupils to complete the work in advance and bring proof of their notes and work (screen shots, written notes) to the sessions along with any further questions.  In the sessions, we will then apply the grammar they have revised in speaking and writing. Exercises are here http://abingdon.fireflycloud.net/german/weekly-support-for-independent-improvement  on Firefly and will be self-marking but pupils can always ask their teacher for clarification. We are starting with Irregular verbs (Session 3 in Firefly) today at 4pm in B4 and will continue with modal verbs (session 4 on Firefly) on Friday 23 January after which we will focus on the perfect tense.

New A Level System (relevant to current 5th years)

Please note that the Deputy Head (Academic), Graeme May, will be speaking about the new A Level curriculum during the break between Parents' Evening appointments on Monday 26 January.  Parents are strongly encouraged to come to the Amey Theatre to hear how Abingdon is planning to capitalise on these changes that all schools are experiencing.
