Sixteen modern linguists travelled to Bath for the University’s annual, well-organised ‘Spotlight on Languages’ day. They did not only gain valuable information on the emphasis Bath sets on further language learning but also on the many ways languages can be combined with humanities or even lead to a law conversion. Students past and present talked about the best year of their lives – their year abroad working and living in Paris, Berlin or a small village in Peru. The Abingdon boys also had a range of workshops to choose from; they could sample a university level session of a language they study already, or an ab initio language such as Italian or Russian or sessions focusing on the geography, history and culture of an area. It was a very useful day that encouraged our linguists to realise that they are already at a level that would allow them to succeed in two years’ time in a language related degree.
