Upper sixth chemists were joined today by visitors from the University of Oxford Chemistry Department, who, in association with the Royal Society of Chemistry, delivered an inspiring 'Spectroscopy in a Suitcase' workshop.
The boys gained hands-on experience of using a state-of-the-art infra-red spectrometer to help them elucidate the structures of some unidentified samples. As well as getting expert advice on spectroscopy from postgraduate researchers, the boys also had the chance to talk to our guests about about studying science at university.
Later in the afternoon, boys undertaking research alongside sixth formers from our partner schools into ionic liquids used the spectrometer to confirm the identity of the compounds they had made as part of their projects.
