In June, Abingdon School’s leading newspaper, The Martlet, attended the National Shine School Media Awards ceremony, at The Royal Over-Seas League in London, where the team were looking to continue their successes from last year. The event started with a series of workshops covering a variety of topics from social media to bookbinding, before talks from The Stationers’ Company and Sir Nicholas Coleridge CBE, who recently planned the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant. After lunch the award ceremony began with schools from across the country waiting to find out how they had done.

In 2021 The Martlet won the categories of Best Overall Content, Best Front Page and Best Newspaper. This year the school was highly commended for having the Best Front Page and the Best Newspaper, narrowly missing out on victories in both categories to Ibstock Place School. Further recognition was given to Abingdon upon being highly commended for Best Design, testament to the hard work of Chester Shen and Freddy Chelsom, who work tirelessly to shape the newspaper. Ben Lisemore was highly commended as Best Editor, rewarding his five years of service to the newspaper. Whilst the newspaper did not have the same quantity of victories as last year, the judging panel were certainly very complimentary of the newspaper, calling it “a quality publication of well-written articles on subjects of substance.” Overall, a successful day out for the team, who will be entering the competition again next year.
