There was a fantastic sense of occasion throughout our opening rugby block fixture of the season against Eton College last weekend. From the first warm-ups to the final handshakes, the pitches were alive with energy, colour, and noise as Abingdon School pupils represented their Club with pride, purpose, and togetherness. This annual meeting is always a highlight of the calendar and, once again, it delivered – a true celebration of school rugby played in the very best spirit.
On the field, Abingdon sides showed resilience in defence and real ambition with ball in hand. Coaches noted pleasing improvements at set-piece and ruck speed, with captains setting high standards before, during, and after matches – reflecting the values emphasised at last week’s Rugby Captains’ Brunch. Many pupils also made their Abingdon debut and deserve special congratulations for stepping in confidently and contributing so positively to their teams.
Off the field, the day was made especially memorable by the hospitality and atmosphere. Our thanks go to Eton for their welcome, and to our own staff for their professionalism and commitment throughout.
As expected in a block of this size, there were close contests and shifts in momentum across the card. Yet the overriding impression was of a healthy, ambitious Abingdon Rugby Club moving forward with confidence at the start of an exciting season. Congratulations to every pupil who pulled on the Abingdon jersey, to our captains for leading with passion and clarity, and to our coaching and support teams for their tireless work behind the scenes.
This was an excellent platform for the weeks ahead. We look forward to the return block fixture against Eton in November, when venues will be reversed for each age group, as well as the upcoming matches against Bloxham School this weekend and our Lower School fixtures starting with a festival at St Hugh’s Prep School midweek.
