The first week back at school after the October half term was busy and successful for the rugby club. Last Tuesday, our 1st XV faced RGS High Wycombe in the last 16 of the U18 National Schools Continental Tyres Cup. This is a significant milestone, as it has only been achieved twice before by an Abingdon School 1st XV. Only a month ago, RGS High Wycombe had won by 60 points, so we knew there needed to be much improvement – and our players did not disappoint. The match was moved to an evening kick-off at Beaconsfield RFC, where a large crowd gathered to support. The 1st team delivered a commendable, arguably ‘performance of the season’ so far, leading 22-21 in the match’s closing moments, only to concede a penalty kick to lose 24-22. It was an exhilarating match that will be remembered in the school’s rugby history.

Friday evening was the annual Touchliners Social event for parents, which this year took place at Loose Cannon Brewery in Abingdon and set the stage for an exciting rugby weekend ahead. On Saturday, over 320 pupils represented Abingdon school rugby from U12 to U18, with 19 teams, including five senior XVs at Sixth Form level. Our Lower School teams played against Abingdon Prep School, while the Middle and Upper School teams competed against Radley College. The matches were highly competitive, and our pupils demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship, skill, and character. Results can be found here.
