Today the CCF and the School remembers those who gave their lives for their country, including the members of the Abingdon School community who died during the two world wars 1914-1918 and 1939-1945. In particular this year, we remember those families who lost brothers. Michael and Denis Holme, killed in action during the Second World War, and Eric and Ronald Graham who died during the First World War.
2nd Lieutenant Michael Holme, Royal Berkshire Regiment, was killed in action during the Fall of France on 21 May 1940. He was 21. His brother, Lieutenant Denis Holme, Royal Berkshire Regiment, was killed in action on 9 August 1944 during the Normandy Campaign. He too was 21. Their father, George Bishop Holme who was not an Old Abingdonian, had lost a leg in 1915 during the Gallipoli Campaign.
Lieutenant Eric Graham, South Wales Borderers, was wounded in action in Belgium in October 1914 and died in a London Hospital on 3 April 1915. He was 21. His brother, Second Lieutenant Ronald Graham, Essex Regiment, was killed in action on 12 March 1915, three weeks before the death of his brother. He was 19.
