Following a number of victories against county champions from Berkshire and Warwickshire, the U16 tennis team travelled to Shrewsbury to compete in the final 4 of the LTA Midlands Region School Tennis Competition. Simply by getting this far, the team is placed in the top 16 schools in the country. They faced Ellesmere College in the semi finals who have a specialist tennis academy attached to their school. However they were no match for destructive hitting from Abingdon and all four players won both singles and doubles matches comfortably. This set up a final with Repton School who are well renowned for their tennis and regularly reach the national finals. The players were unfazed and won both doubles matches and three of the four singles matches to defeat the Repton team 5 sets to 1. This secured Abingdon’s place in the National Finals and we are now one of the top 4 tennis school teams in the country at this age group. Congratulations to Sam, Matt, Cyrus and Dan who will now travel to Bolton Arena in December to play the winners of the other three regional finals.
