The second annual Piano Extravaganza proved to be a huge sensation. After weeks of dedicated preparation, the grand event brought together pianists from across the school — from the youngest in Lower School to the accomplished musicians of Upper Sixth.

The evening was impressively opened by Benjamin playing an etude by Kapustin, on a single piano— from there it moved through duets, an impressive “five hands at one piano” performance, and building up in both energy and complexity to multiple-piano arrangements.

The audience was treated to wonderful displays of coordination and creativity as two, then three, and eventually five pianos filled the Amey Theatre. One of the highlights of the evening was a thrilling rendition of the James Bond theme, delivered on five pianos with synchronised precision.

The final two pieces brought most of the pianists together. First, Pharrell Williams’ exuberant hit “Happy” was performed by 16 pianists across 8 pianos that had everyone smiling. Then, in the grand finale worthy of its name, “Thunderbirds” was played with a staggering 24 pianists playing impressively on the 8 pianos.

This year’s Piano Extravaganza not only showcased technical skill and musicality but also celebrated the fact that piano playing does not need to be a ‘lonely’ journey. The evening successfully collaborated with pianists of all ages and skills. It was a truly unforgettable night that captured the power of music to unite, inspire, and uplift.
