Saturday saw Abingdon tennis players competing in the OXIST tournament against Radley, St Edward’s (seniors only) and Magdalen College School. It was a glorious afternoon and all the players involved seemed to enjoy themselves. As well as having the U14A, U15A and 1st VIII competing in the tournament, the U15Bs, U13As and the U12As went to MCS for a friendly fixture.

The OXIST tournament is a classic clash between these Oxfordshire schools and is always hotly contested. The U14 As hosted at Tilsley Park and put in a great performance, taking a close victory against MCS before going on to beat Radley. Overall they won 113 games and emerged victorious.

The U15 As were also successful and were dominant against both MCS and Radley. The match was scored in sets and Abingdon won 21 out of a total of 23 sets played. A phenomenal result of which the boys can be truly proud.

Unfortunately the U18 team were up against it from the get go, being down a player and therefore immediately losing 4 singles matches and 2 doubles matches before the rounds had even begun. Despite this disadvantage they dug deep and really tried hard. Their efforts were confounded by a lack of familiarity of playing on grass courts and they were defeated by quite a margin.

The U12s and U13s were also defeated but put in a great performance and seemed to enjoy the afternoon. The U15 B team was strong and managed to win their fixture overall. It looks like our current fourth years are shaping up to become an exceptionally strong team in the years to come. Huge well done to all of those who played and a big thank you to all of the staff who helped to get 41 boys all out in the good weather and enjoying some quality sport!
