As part of our Sixth Form Mathematics Enrichment Program, over 20 sixth formers chose to attend a video lecture in the Amey Theatre on Friday afternoon, watching the Mathematician and current Oxford Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, Marcus du Sautoy, discuss the limits of scientific knowledge, in his lecture entitled “What We Cannot Know”.
Marcus left the pupils wondering whether time might eventually run out, whether rolling a dice (or indeed anything) is truly random and whether there are limits as to what we might know about our physical universe. With the lecture touching on Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, chaos theory, probability theory and quantum mechanics, we trust that it left the pupils inspired to learn more.
