Twenty eight students completed a two week biology field trip to Mexico with Operation Wallacea. The first week was spent surveying wildlife from a remote camp in the jungle near Calakmul. The conditions were challenging with very high humidity and excessive numbers of mosquitos. However the students completed day and night herpetology transects, trapped and monitored butterfly, bird and bat populations along with large area habitat surveying. All the data collected will add to the long term biodiversity study of the area.
The second week was spent completing a tropical marine ecology course in Akumal. The students completed field work on the reef by scuba diving or snorkeling. This included fish and coral identification. Surveying the reef using quadrants and transects as well as monitoring sea grass and turtle populations.
