The Hockey season started off in emphatic fashion with a full block fixture vs Wellington College.
The 1st XI got off to a winning start playing under lights in their Friday Night Lights game. With some scintillating counter attack hockey on display Abingdon ran out 8-1 winners. That cements them at the top of the ISHL league in the first week. The 2s dominated possession in their game but unfortunately couldn’t find the finishing touches to some brilliant build up play and lost 1-2. The 3s made it difficult for themselves, but showed tremendous spirit to battle back after going down 2-0. They played some great hockey and won 6-2.
The U16s got off to winning ways with an excellent 4-1 victory, as did the U15As. The U15 Bs, conceded a last second equaliser to draw 2-2. The U15As match report below was written by captain Sam Inskip:
‘We started the first half very lively putting Wellington under a lot of pressure early on and it could have been 1-0 within the first few minutes when Josh was sent through on goal only to be denied by the opposition keeper. Near the end of the first half we were put under a lot of pressure but a very good defensive performance by Alfio, Tom and Oli helped to keep them out. The second half was all Abingdon’s with the ball hardly entering our own half. Wellington cracked when Josh’s shot came off the keeper for Eddie’s tap in finish to make it 1-0. All round great performance from Abingdon and a great way to start our season.’
Away from home the U14 As had a good match, playing some superb hockey, running out 4-1 winners. The U14Bs played in an absolute thriller losing out narrowly 4-5 as did the U14 Cs 0-1.
Overall a great start to the season! With a busy week ahead with the lower school playing their opening fixture, the U16 county tournament and a block fixture vs St Edward’s we are in full flow!
