On 17 October, 39 pupils and 4 members of staff set off for a five day trip to Granada, Spain.
Highlights of the visit included:
- Our daily Spanish lessons, which were conducted entirely in Spanish; we spoke lots and did many great activities, a favourite being the designing and explanation of our own imaginary country, to practice the future tense. The teachers were friendly and dynamic and made sure we had lots of fun.
- A visit to the renowned Alhambra palace. After a somewhat tiring walk up to the palace from the city, we were rewarded with some amazing views from one of the towers and incredibly intricate artwork and architecture, above all in the Nasrid palace. It was great to learn about the different aspects of Spanish and Islamic history.
- A cookery lesson; there were many different dishes on offer for us to cook and more importantly to taste. These included Salmorejo, Spanish Chicken Kebabs, Atún con Oloroso and Sangria (¡sin alcohol!).
- Afterwards we headed down to the park to play football, where the long-awaited 4th vs 5th year El Clásico was ready to commence. A special mention to Clement who did not fail to impress players with his great courage and interesting decisions.
- A visit to a nearby tapas restaurant where we got to try many different kinds of food – from mini hamburgers to berenjenas con miel to a Spanish chocolate mousse. The food was all delicious, and we all had a really good time.
- After the tapas, we went to do some flamenco dancing. It was a lot more difficult than most of us had expected! We had a lot of fun though, especially when we began to get the hang of it towards the end.
- Finally we have to mention the friendly families – often abuelas – who looked after us in their homes. We were spoiled with lots of home cooked food and enjoyed having to practise our language skills, as literally none of them spoke any English!
All in all it was a really fun and worthwhile trip.
