Eight Sixth Formers applying for degrees in engineering had a tour of the Abingdon dining pavilion building site. It provided a fantastic opportunity to learn first hand some of the challenges involved in construction, including tree protection, archaeological digs, planning law compliance, connection to mains utilities services, failing light and deteriorating weather conditions. They learned about the different routes into engineering, including apprenticeship schemes. A particular highlight was seeing the remote control operated crane which is built on a specially designed “sacrificial pad” – a block of concrete to support it – which will have to be dug up when the project is complete.
