Week 8 of the football season got underway with the U16 Cs enjoying a small-sided fixture with Our Lady’s Abingdon U15 As, before a mid-week block against Cokethorpe. Over at Cokethorpe, whilst the U15 As lost 0-2, goals from Tom Morgan, Hugo Lee and a double for Ben Lisemore helped the U15 Bs to a 4-0 win. Felix Kind got his 3rd hat-trick in as many matches as the U14 As won 6-3, whilst the U14 Bs won 10-1.
Over at the main school the 4th XI had to settle for a 1-1 draw, whilst the 3rd XI played some free flowing football in their 13-0 win. A 2-0 win on Waste Court was a superb effort from the 2nd XI. Over at Tilsley Park a tidy finish from Josh Ponting and a second from Hector Chambers helped Abingdon 1st XI move into a 2-0 lead, however a quick penalty and a second Cokethorpe goal followed with the game finishing all square at 2-2.
Saturday saw the return leg of the U14s' fixtures v Berkhamsted as we welcomed them to Cox’s Field. Having lost 2-8 in the first week of the season a fantastic performance saw the U14 As leave with a 3-0 win. A terrific effort demonstrating the progress these boys have made. The U14 Bs and Cs won 4-1 and 5-1 respectively. The U14 Ds game eventually finishing 1-4.
Sam Webber, Joe Turner, Will Wallis and Rory King were all on target for the U15 As as they put 4 past Radley U15 A, whilst a Theo Hinnells hat-trick helped the U15 Bs to an 8-1 win over Radley 15 B. The U16 As played some fantastic, structured, intelligent football in their 6-1 win whilst the U16 Bs also won 5-3. Two goals from Francesco Bartolini, and one each for Hamish Carle and Max Upton helped the U16 Cs to a 4-0 win.
The senior fixtures were across at Radley and, on a fantastic first for the school, Abingdon School Football Club fielded 6 senior sides with over 75 senior players involved. The 6th XI went 1-0 up, however unfortunately lost 1-2 whilst the 5th XI lost 0-5 and the 4th XI 0-4. The 3rd XI will feel they could have left with more than their 1-4 loss. A fine finish from Oscar Frost helped the 2nd XI to their second 2-0 win of the week in the 2nd XI fixture. A great effort given previous results at this level.
In the 1st XI game it looked as if Abingdon was going to rue a number of missed opportunities, and with the game tied at 0-0 with 5 minutes to go Hector Chambers broke through and was taken down, a penalty awarded to Abingdon. Captain Jamie Masters held his nerve, slotting the ball past the keeper to give Abingdon a hard earned 1-0 win in an entertaining and competitive fixture.
The Football Club now looks forward to lower school fixtures v Dragon on Wednesday before a big block fixture v St John’s Leatherhead next Saturday.
