Battling London traffic and a general lack of parking space, Mr Coolin, Miss Papadopoulos and the upper sixth English cohort travelled to the illustrious West End to see the closing performance of Equus by Peter Shaffer at Trafalgar Studios. Equus explores the often blurred line between sanity and madness with characters such as Dr Dysart and Alan Strang brought vividly to life by Zubin Varla and Ethan Kai respectively. Minimalist staging, a packed auditorium and an ever present scent of cigarettes from the stage re-created the atmosphere of a mental asylum in Shaffer's famous 1973 play, one that cannot be experienced on the page alone. As the performance drew to its climax, the audience erupted in thunderous applause as this horse-themed exploration into mental illness and modern society came to an end.
