Abingdon’s Physics Department took ten Third Year students to the Diamond Light Source facility. We were shown around the particle accelerator and several of the experiments that take place. It was a truly amazing visit with a rare opportunity to see behind the scenes. Diamond has been in the news recently due to their work helping to read the Herculaneum scrolls using machine learning and X-ray spectroscopy. We also witnessed some of the setup used for imaging the inner workings of protein crystals, X-ray powder diffraction and more. Our very own Physics teacher Dr Reimers also worked at Diamond and can be seen on pictures around the facility.
A huge thank you to Dr Elizabeth Shotton and her team for welcoming us and guiding us round!
