The Abingdon School community is saddened to hear of the death of Dr Vernon Butt. Dr Butt, who has died at the age of 97, was a governor at the School in his capacity as Mayor of Abingdon during the civic year 1996/1997 and for several years was also the Pembroke College nominated governor.

Vernon had a long and distinguished academic career. He was elected as Fellow and Tutor in Botany at Pembroke College Oxford in 1965 and he served for a decade as Tutor for Admissions, taking up the post of Vicegerent in 1978-79 and spending time as Curator of Gardens. A plant biochemist, with interests in plant metabolism and enzymology, Vernon continued his work in retirement. A keen sportsman, Vernon took up marathon running in his 60s and was a cricket enthusiast.

Vernon generously supported the local community. He served as a Town Councillor from 1991 to 2003 and as a Vale of White Horse District Councillor, and Chairman of the Vale from 2000 to 2002. He was elected a Freeman of the town of Abingdon in July 2003. Vernon was also associated with St Michael’s Church, President of Abbey Brass, Honorary President of Abingdon Artists and he contributed to the work of the Abingdon and District Citizens’ Advice Bureau through the Trustee Board and the Friends.

Our condolences go to his wife, Glynne who is a current member of the Governing Body. He will be sadly missed.
