Abingdon Science Partnership trialled a new workshop with Year 3 and 4 students from Sunningwell Primary School on the topic of ‘Ice and Climate’.
To begin with, the pupils learned the difference between sea ice, ice sheets and icebergs and were able to correctly identify each different type of ice in photographs of Antarctica.
Then, the focus shifted to climate change. The pupils were shown the impact of melting ice, demonstrated using a model in a fish tank, the result of which flooded the tropical house!
Pupils were asked to consider ways to combat climate change and suggested an impressive range of ideas which included burning fewer fossil fuels; using the car less; utilising nuclear fusion; and geoengineering.
