Last week we welcomed Leo Popplewell (chamber musician, recitalist and orchestral principal) to Abingdon to share his wealth of experience with the our cellists. The evening opened with the Cello Ensemble playing Hymnus, Op.57 by Klengel, followed by five individual lessons, with the pupils playing repertoire by Brahms, Haydn, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich.
Leo shared not only his knowledge in technical ways of making the instrument sounding better, but also delved into the mood and interpretation of the various pieces. Through insightful commentary, he really brought the music to life, helping the students to understand the reasoning behind the compositions, and not only the notes on the paper. By linking the music to the story of its composer – their struggles and vision, students could connect with the music in a meaningful way.
Some of his strengths were his approachable and kind manner as well as his engaging personality, helping them to relax and bring out the best in their playing.
What was also inspiring was Leo’s demonstrations, his excellent technique and musicality as well his love for music, were clear throughout the whole evening. Each pupil improved significantly through each of the lessons.
