The Second Year visited Caerleon Roman Fort in Wales to get a sense of the life of a Roman soldier in Britain ahead of a topic on the Roman army. Despite the odd heavy rain shower (which the Romans must have resented too!), pupils were able to appreciate both the disadvantages of the cramped conditions in the barracks and the first-class facilities given to the soldiers on base, including a huge bathhouse and an amphitheatre for entertainment. Pupils also used their Latin translation skills to read tombstones that offered a picture of the multicultural camp.
