Partnerships bring energy, innovation and friendship
By Rob Southwell-Sander, Director of Partnerships

Energy, innovation and friendship – these are the words which best sum up partnerships at Abingdon School to me. Not only does Abingdon have its own partnership programme, Abingdon School in Partnership (ASiP) but, as a founding member of the OX14 Learning Partnership, it is one of six local schools who have agreed that formal collaboration, sharing of resources and best practice provides a golden opportunity to enhance the education of our young people in and around the town.

These opportunities range from academic activities and events such as science workshops for primary aged children, ably assisted by Sixth Form students; to the extracurricular such as creating and producing a film; or may encompass both – electric go kart building and racing, anyone? Equally, though, the partnership is there to foster friendships, hone teamwork and leadership skills – in other words, help all young people be better prepared for the world which awaits them once they’ve left the school gates behind.

There is an important health element too with physical fitness and emotional wellbeing central to what is on offer. A multisports club helps to keep young people fit, energised and skilled. One attendee said: “I enjoyed it so much. The coaches were very friendly and in the end I understood football more than I used to before. I also liked mixing with new people.” Whilst various projects assist with helping students address important PSHCE issues. Supporting the wellbeing and mental health of the students in our schools is a top priority. Various projects across our partnerships focus on this including a brand new event for the OX14 Learning Partnership, SupportED. The current landscape paints a dim picture of teenage mental health and this is an opportunity for students to learn how they can help themselves to be well. With a focus on the 5 ways to wellbeing (NHS), the day aims to bring 100 students from 6 schools together to take part in practical workshops including yoga, quilling, getting active and much more. The day will also include input from local mental health charities One Eighty and The Abingdon Bridge with whom we work closely with.

SupportED takes place on 20 June at Abingdon. For more information, contact [email protected].
