Exciting times at Abingdon School – Head, Mike Windsor, provides an update on the School’s move to co-education.

It’s nearly two years since Abingdon announced it would be welcoming girls to Year 7 and Sixth Form from September 2026. We’ve been busy putting plans in place to ensure both girls and boys will benefit from the change. With a strong number of girls recently accepting places to Sixth Form this September, the move is beginning to feel ever more real. Having shared the news of their acceptances with friends, we are now opening up another round of admissions so others have an opportunity to apply.

We want all our students to enjoy the benefits of physical exercise and to leave us with habits that will stand them in good stead for life. We will be contacting our Sixth Form girls to better understand their wishes and preferences as we prepare their sporting programme. This will match the nearly 30 sports we currently offer, including dance and netball, which were introduced last September and which our current students are already enjoying.

We’re also seeing growing numbers of students enjoying the extended facilities in our new Athletic Development Centre, which includes a spin studio, while the High Performance Centre provides space for more specialised work on Strength and Conditioning. A new multi-use sports area will provide further space for netball, tennis and basketball, and we are also embracing the rising popularity of padel, preparing a planning application for three covered courts at Tilsley Park. A new timetable, due to be launched in September, will ensure Abingdon students make the best possible use of our facilities.

After careful consultation with the School Council, our newly designed uniforms will look smart and stylish, and we’re reviewing our sports kit too, to make sure everyone feels comfortable as they get their exercise fix.

We’ve shared these updates and the best of what we’ve learned with both our current pupils and our staff to ensure that all Abingdon students feel a strong sense of belonging from Day One.
