At the end of last term The Martlet team entered their 21st edition into The Shine Media Awards, a national competition judged by a distinguished panel of journalists and academics. The results were announced virtually on Youtube on Monday and the team did tremendously well picking up two awards for best newspaper front cover and best stand-alone article. They were also highly commended in the following categories: best newspaper, best content and best print and design. Sam Penrose’s article on organ donation, which won best article, was described as being a piece which the judges could imagine seeing ‘in the health pages of a national newspaper’ and Sam will be invited to a masterclass on journalism in London next year. The judges described The Martlet’s winning front page, as having a ‘bold, clear message….brilliantly conveyed by the stark picture and simple layout. They considered it to be, ‘Very impressive’.
