There are now over 40 Abingdon School Science Ambassadors between 4th Year and Sixth Form who regularly help run the Primary and Saturday Science Clubs. Run by staff from our science department, these have proved as popular as ever with local primary schools and the Abingdon Area Home Educators Group. This term, we have developed an exciting new workshop, called Rocks, Soils and Fossils to cover the KS2 curriculum but using resources and equipment usually only available in a secondary science laboratory. This term has also seen the introduction of Astronomy Ambassadors who assist both at Abingdon’s Other Half GCSE Astronomy group and with evening visits from groups, such as the Scouts, to our inflatable planetarium. Another new initiative is the Motorsports Club, run in collaboration with Fitzharrys School’s Fitz24 Racing Team and sponsored by local automotive companies Zircotech Ltd and GKN’s Innovation Centre in Abingdon. Six Abingdon students are now collaborating with peers from John Mason and Fitzharrys to build, and race, a couple of Greenpower F24 electric go karts.
