This year, World Book Day looked a little bit different, with students participating in a variety of virtual activities from writing workshops to scavenger hunts!
The celebrations began at the start of the week, with the launch of the Book Review and Book Cover Design competitions. Students were tasked with writing a review of a book they recently read, one they loved, or even one they hated! Each fantastic entry received a commendation, with extra prizes for winners who will be announced at the end of the week.
For the Book Cover Design competition, we asked the students to design a new book cover, either because they fell in love with the book, or because they just couldn’t stand the way it currently looked. We had a wide range of submissions, each being awarded a commendation, with extra prizes for the winners.
It was wonderful to see our pupils engaging with reading right from the start of the week, and the fun only started there!
This morning, as World Book Day began, the Lower School were given a literary themed scavenger hunt. They had to look for ten objects around their house that linked to a particular book, then send a picture of themselves and their guess for which book it was. The First Year were hunting for Alice in Wonderland themed items, and the Second Year got into the world of James Bond. Great fun was had all round, with Freddie M (1st Year) and Charlie T (2nd Year) winning the prizes for fastest completion of the task. Well done to all involved!
At 11:15am, selected students from the Third Year attended a virtual writing workshop with YA author Martin Stewart (Riverkeep, The Sacrifice Box), who showed them how to carefully craft their characters and avoid writing about sequences of events. The students were highly engaged and asked some great questions, and had particular fun writing dialogue and guessing who the characters were.
Next week, the Lower School will be watching a personalised recorded lecture from Mr Stewart; answering all their questions about what it’s like to be a writer, and how to work on building ideas. Thank you so much to Mr Stewart for all his time and fantastic work with our students.
