In September, Abingdon School held their annual violin masterclass led by the internationally renowned concert violinist Ning Kam, a celebrated teacher at the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School. Four of our talented violinists had the opportunity to perform for Ning, receiving guidance and inspiration from her unique and thought-provoking teaching style. What set this masterclass apart was Ning’s highly interactive approach. Rather than simply offering corrections, she continuously engaged the students with insightful questions, encouraging them to think critically and identify solutions for themselves. This empowering method helped each performer unlock new levels of expression and confidence in real time.

Throughout the session, Ning focused on several key aspects of musicianship: posture, bow hold, sound projection, and – perhaps most importantly – the intent and emotion behind the music. She challenged the students to consider not just how to play, but why they were playing – exploring character, interpretation, and the composer’s intent. The masterclass concluded with an energetic and fast-paced group session, where six students were tasked with learning a new piece in record time. She wanted to demonstrate the importance of focused, efficient learning rather than relying on long-term repetition without depth. It was an eye-opening exercise that pushed the students to listen, adapt, and concentrate immediately. The evening ended on a high note as Ning Kam performed her own stunning arrangement of Amazing Grace, blending classical and jazz elements with virtuosity and exquisite tone. Her playing left the audience both amazed and deeply moved.

It was a truly inspiring masterclass. The students as well as the audience members left the CMR with a renewed passion for music, armed with practical tools – and unforgettable memories – from a truly exceptional experience.
