It is an honour to introduce Ian Murphy, an internationally acclaimed artist renowned for his powerful exploration of the beauty found in imperfection and the passage of time. After completing his A Levels and Foundation course in Wigan, Ian honed his artistic skills at Sheffield University, where he graduated with First Class Honours in Fine Art, Painting, and Printmaking.
His emotive tonal drawings and mixed-media oil paintings focus on themes of erosion, neglect, and abandonment within architectural spaces. Through masterful layering of textures and tones, Murphy’s work transcends the physical decay of forgotten structures, revealing profound narratives about cultural identity and history. His pieces invite viewers into immersive worlds, where the aesthetic of neglect is celebrated, and the rich stories of time-worn buildings come to life.
Ian’s unique approach has established him as a leading voice in contemporary art. He has worked with many of our Third Year students, giving them valuable insight into their GCSE work and inspiring a deeper appreciation for the media they are using in their architectural projects.
