Last Wednesday, the Abingdon 1st IV travelled to North Oxford Tennis Club to face d’Overbroeck’s in round two of the Glanville Cup. With the conditions being tough, we knew it was going to be a close contest. After some long singles matches, we were level 2-2 with everything to play for in the doubles. After a strong performance from Monty Bowles and Max Struthers, we were level 3-3 with a shootout out match tiebreak to ten to decide the fixture. Max S and Max WB teamed up and fought hard but narrowly missed out 10-8 and d’Overbroeck’s took the win.
On Saturday, the 1st VIII played in the ISL first round against Charterhouse, St Paul’s and Tonbridge. After many strong performances from everyone and in particular Samuel Hughes who managed to win 6/6 of his matches, Charterhouse, Tonbridge and Abingdon were all level on points and it therefore came down to sets difference. By the thinnest of margins, Abingdon managed to win by having 21 sets to Charterhouse’s 20 and Tonbridge having 19. The Abingdon 1st VIII are now into round 2 of the ISL.
