The end of the summer term saw Abingdon compete in the prestigious ISTA (Independent Schools Tennis Association) tournament. This annual event is attended by over 50 schools from across the country and represents the pinnacle of school tennis performance. There are competitions and consolation draws for U13s, U15s and U18s and Abingdon entered teams in every age category. The U13 sides played well but didn’t quite make it to the main draw and were, unfortunately, knocked out of the consolation draw after the first round. It was a great experience for them and I’m sure they will be back in future years. The U15 2nd pair started well but unfortunately got knocked out of the main draw. The U15 1st pair progressed to the semi finals of the Springthorpe cup, a decent result, before losing 8-5. The U18s put in two stellar performances in rounds 1 and 2 and then drew Ewell Castle, the 2nd seed in the tournament, for round 3. The standard of tennis was superb but, unfortunately, a powerful Ewell squad took the victory. Ewell went on to come 2nd overall, beaten by Bradfield. It was a lovely finish to the year and we look forward to an even stronger season in 2023. My congratulations and appreciation go to all of the tennis players that have competed in the 2022 season, as well as to the staff who have helped to make the last 10 weeks so successful.

Mr Allen, Master i/c Tennis
