The standard of tennis continues to improve at Abingdon and we have achieved some great results both in traditional matches but also in national tournaments and competitions. Our senior team of Will Pearson, Lafite Lo, Sam Christie and Max Hall beat both Radley (12-0) and MCS in the National Schools competition, thereby reaching the Regional Finals for the second time in two years; no other school in the region has achieved that. In the regional final they were defeated by a very strong team from Alcester Grammar School.
Sam Christie and Max Hall won the local ‘Radlingdon’ tournament and Ethan McLellan and Jimmy Strainge finished runners up. Will Taylor and Michael Porter won the Plate competition.
Sebastien Muller played outstanding tennis recently to win the U15 singles tournament featuring a large number of independent schools held at MCS – and Felix Breach won the ‘plate’ competition, another first for Abingdon!
Abingdon also performed impressively at the recent Independent Schools Tennis Association championships at Eton College. The senior team of Will Pearson, Lafite Lo, Ethan McLennan and Aron Lavis beat Reigate and Warwick Schools before losing in a hard fought match against a strong team from Repton. The U13 pair of Max Struthers and Can Tugcetin gained valuable experience in the junior part of the competition.
At U15 level Felix Breach and Sebastien Muller played superbly throughout to win the Phillips Cup. So Abingdon gets to retain the trophy which had also been won the previous year.
