The first two weeks of term have flown by and the Abingdon seniors have been engaged in a number of important tennis matches. The first team beat Radley in the Glanville Cup and progressed to the next round, playing Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School next. They have also performed well in the Independent Schools League. This tournament is played over two days and is a gruelling series of matches, with boys playing a total of six other schools. Abingdon narrowly missed out in the first round of the ISL, coming second to MCS, after a hard fought series of matches with terrible weather conditions interrupting play. This placed them in Group 2 for Saturday 7th of May, competing against Charterhouse, Radley and St George’s. The boys were narrowly beaten to first place by Radley, who put in a strong performance and were deserved winners. They came out second in Group 2, placing them 6th overall.
This Saturday will see the top 32 Abingdon players take on Radley in the annual “Radlingdon” match. It will be great to see some of our younger players out on the courts. The tournament is always a good opportunity for more junior players to challenge the seniors. Considering that Radley placed 5th in the ISL overall, I anticipate a strong desire to regain some pride in this local derby.
