We celebrated the return of solo performance to school on Tuesday after a gap of six months and it was wonderful to hear our musicians again in live performance.

This concert, the first solo platform of the year, was an opportunity for us to hear 16 excellent solo performances from a range of talented musicians representing woodwind, brass, strings and piano.

The clarinettists included Harry Gee (Dacre’s Daisy Bell), David Hrushovski (Weber) and Jamie Kilroy (Brahms). Our trumpeter was Laurence Peverall (Hhubeau) and we heard cellists, Hugo Payton (Vivaldi) and Oliver Simpson (Locatelli and Cassado).

We heard some outstanding piano performances in the second half of the concert. They included Boco To (Scarlatti), Oliver Hobbs (Bruch), Charles Geday (Haydn), Josh Bromley (Benda), Andreas Lo (Burgmuller), William Bywater (Gershwin), Laurence Peverall (Schubert) and Daniel Zhang in Chopin’s E minor Waltz.

Our thanks to the boys for a wonderful evening of music making and particularly to Lynette Stulting for some skilled and sympathetic accompaniment. Although we could have no parental audience, we were able to set up a “live-stream” for the CMR and an edited video recording of the concert is available here.
