Last Thursday, Abingdon School provided a team for the regional heats of the English Speaking Union’s Schools’ Mace competition. Last year we made it to the regional final before the competition was cut short by Covid-19. This year we were up against Aylesbury Grammar School, St Helen’s and Radley College in the first heat. Our team of James Gibson, Charles Maddison and Harvey Bell opposed the motion that: “This House Believes that government economic policy should prioritise the collective happiness and wellbeing of the population over economic growth”. Despite a strong performance our teams’ speeches went over time leaving the way open for St Helen’s to go through to the next round.
