Congratulations to all Abingdon sailors who participated in the BSDRA finals regatta which was held at Farmoor reservoir last week. Abingdon sent one Firefly team (from Third Year, Fourth Year and Lower Sixth) to this team-racing regatta. We finished 12th out of 29 teams which included teams from the USA, China and Ireland.

This was a particularly impressive result given that the Abingdon sailing program is a varied program which focuses on single handed lasers and double hander trapeze sailing. Our sailors had a very limited time to train on fireflies and learn the team racing format. We were pitched against schools who exclusively train in fireflies for these competitions and had a particularly difficult draw against teams who placed second and third.

Also a shout out and best wishes to Ed who will be competing internationally against the best 29er sailors from 30 nations in the 29er World Championship in Denmark in August. The 29er is a double hander skiff and Ed’s head will no doubt be almost skimming the water as he leans out on his trapeze.

Good luck to Julien and Alex who have both been chosen to represent the UK in the ILCA 6 Youth European Championships in BallyHolme at the end of July. (The ILCA is a single-handed Olympic class dinghy, formerly known as a Laser). They will be competing against sailors from 42 European countries.
