16 March 2017

Our U16 and U14 VII took part in the prestigious Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet, Sevens on Sunday 12 March. This tournament is in its 41st year and boasts the top 64 teams from England and Wales, many of whom are aiming high at the Rosslyn Park National Sevens in two weeks time.

The tournament format for both the U14s and U16s was eight groups with four schools in each group. The winner of the group would go into the main Cup competition with the runner up in the group going into the Plate competition.

Our U14s had three close matches, improving in every minute played. All the boys really enjoyed themselves in what for many was their first ever sevens tournament for Abingdon School. Unfortunately they did not progress from the group stage into the knockout rounds, but that was not from lack of effort. A fantastic experience for our U14s and one which will benefit them moving forward.

U14 Group Results:

7-17 loss versus Brighton College
12-32 loss versus Wimbledon College
28-7 win versus Sutton Valence School

Our U16s had a terrific day improving and enjoying their rugby sevens immensely. Some inspired performances by the boys with impressive support and offloading skills on display in every match.

U16 Group Results:

14-7 win versus Reigate Grammar School
36-7 win versus Coopers' Coborn School
Group game – Bye win over Dulwich College 25-0

This set up a Cup quarter final against Langley School. 10-0 up at halftime the team rolled the changes throughout and were incredible. But unfortunately it was not to be, with Langley finishing the stronger and pipping the boys into the semi-final against eventual winners Wellington College. Final score 26-10 to Langley.

A big thank you to the parents for supporting both age groups so superbly in the right spirit. Thank you to the boys for your work rate and commitment to the Sunday tournament. A great day all round and an experience to build upon in the coming weeks.
