Year 8 escaped last week’s rain for a Geography field trip to the Jurassic Coast, Dorset. We started at the magnificent rock arch at Durdle Door examining the coastal geomorphology of St Oswald’s Bay before walking over the hillside to Lulworth Cove. After a break for lunch, we split into two groups for a closer look at the unique geology of this UNESCO World Heritage coastline, with some field sketching of Stair Hole and the Lulworth Crumple.

The second group were slightly thwarted by a huge landslide in the chalk cliffs which collapsed in February 2024. This meant we stuck to the side of the cove to carry out our beach investigations – the students set out their own transects to measure the angle of the beach surface and carried out some sediment sampling.

We finished the day with some well earned fish and chips before the journey home to APS.
