Whatever your level, playing in an ensemble is a really important and fun part of learning an instrument. Come and join the Abingdon Prep Symphony Orchestra to play music from Star Wars to Mozart!

Whether you want to put together a miniature spitfire, tank, Landrover or lifeboat, Airfix modelling club is the place for you! Bring along your own kit and have fun with your friends as you carefully plan and build your kit. Once constructed, enjoy painting and decorating your creation.

Please note that you need to provide your own kit which can be obtained from a variety of online retailers or toy shops. A good place to start looking is the official airfix website.

Love to sing? The All-Stars choir is open to students across the Middle and Senior sections, and will be exploring technique and ensemble work through a range of genres, from pop to show, Disney to traditional. There will be opportunities for performing both in and outside school, including project work with Abingdon Senior music department.

Come along to the Art room and join our Head of Art to craft and create something amazing! We will learn about awesome artists, super sculptures, crazy crafts and silly sketches.

Every year the DT department sets a whole school design challenge where pupils, staff and parents rise to the creative brief. Exhibits are displayed in the main hallway and form part of the Art & Design Exhibition in May. Recent challenges include ‘The Great APS Wooden Spoon Exhibition’, ‘Upcycled Plastic Bottle Challenge’ and ‘Upcycled Paper Challenge’.

The community response is always outstanding with ideas displaying out-of-the-box thinking and ingenious creativity on all levels.

Pupils are taught archery by a qualified archery coach. It aims to build coordination, strength and concentration. Suitable for all abilities, the sessions consist of target shooting, games and competitions with an emphasis on enjoyment.

The charge is £6 per session and will be applied to each pupil’s termly account in arrears. Art scholarship candidates will explore the process of creating a portfolio, working towards an arts interview and preparing for their drawing exam.

Arts award students will also create a portfolio with structured themes, however focussing more on practical skills and sharing those with others in preparation for their moderation and Bronze award from Trinity College London.

If you are interested in pursuing either of these clubs please do talk to Sherrey directly. This club is by invitation only – for year 7 and 8 students demonstrating a keen passion for creative arts.

Pupils will explore artists both historical and contemporary to inspire a variety of artistic experiments.

We also link to world events such as Christmas, Easter, Diwali, Remembrance Day and at times work on the set, and props for school plays.

We structure the club alternating between a taught session and free choice week for pupils to work on pieces of their own choosing too.

The aim of the Athletics Club is to provide an opportunity for all those with an interest to learn and to develop new skills. The club has a structured programme of coaching and regular competition that takes place in the Summer term against a large number of schools, at a local, regional and national level. Coaching is provided across a wide range of track and field events.

Training takes place during curriculum PE lessons and as part of the Other Half. Sports Day is held at the Senior School’s Tilsley Park with superb athletic facilities including an eight lane, floodlit track with steeplechase, pole vault, high jump and long jump facilities, a new throws area for javelin, shot put and discus as well as a 300 seat covered grandstand.

In the summer term, we will be offering an Aussie Rules club, courtesy of our Australian Gap student, Jack Foster, who has a lot of experience of this game in his native Australia. Aussie Rules is a really exciting sport that incorporates some brilliant skills, and this club would offer a unique opportunity to try it out. No previous experience is necessary!

Year 8 or Year 7 have half a term each of badminton. Warm-up games are played (which tend to take on a bit of a competitive challenge in themselves) before the games commence in earnest! The Club promotes enjoyment of the sport, whilst giving some tips and strategies for game improvement.

Senior Basketball Club aims to provide children with the skills and game awareness required to play in competitive situations. It will build upon the skills developed in PE lessons and as such is accessible by players of all abilities. There will be music, time to shoot hoops without pressure, and of course a good workout!

When was the last time you questioned one of life’s big mysteries? Why is the sky blue? Where does the universe begin and where does it end? Why do we age and will we continue to age in the future? What would happen if insects disappeared? Through an abundance of natural curiosity and aided by online research and discussion, pupils create a Self Organised Learning Environment (SOLE) to seek answers to open-ended ‘Big Questions’. They will collate their ideas in order to present them to their peers. You never know what you might discover in the process; new ideas, different ways of looking at the world, a subject to unfold further?

Pupils will learn how to create their own personal blog. A blog is an online diary or informational website, where pupils can record their opinions, stories or interests as well as photos and videos. Blogs can focus on a single topic or a wide range of themes and ideas, therefore, it is ideal for those pupils who enjoy writing and have clear ideas of what they would like to write about. Their blog will not be visible on the web, however, they will be able to invite family members to view their blog should they wish.

This club is for anyone who enjoys playing board games or card games. You will have the opportunity to play some old favourites, as well as be introduced to some new games. Some games will require teamwork or strategy, others will be based on luck and chance – but all will be fun to play!

Pupils have the opportunity to play and explore a number of exciting board games each week. Not only will this be a fun club but it will help develop problem solving and decision making skills as well as helping pupils to learn how to be a ‘good sport’ when playing competitive games. Some weeks we will focus on one game and learn all the rules associated with that game – so get ready parents for the board game battles to commence at home!

A great way to get rid of some extra energy at the end of a long day of working hard! The children will be learning proper drumming techniques, but combined with the much more accessible use of plastic buckets. Watch out parents – they may want to practise at home!

This club provides additional opportunities and support for the ‘Tycoon in Schools‘ Enterprise competition, which all Year 7 pupils will be entering during their ICT lessons in the Autumn term.

Working together in teams, they will develop an idea for a product or service for which they will write a business plan and create a presentation to pitch for a start-up loan from the Peter Jones Foundation.

They will use their ICT skills to create a variety of sales and marketing materials including presentations, posters, videos and spreadsheets, leading up to a product launch at the Christmas Bazaar.

Pupils will learn how to play effectively as an ensemble, and will learn a variety of music in different musical styles, and build further on fundamental aspects of cello technique. Due to the nature of the ensemble, this is an invitation only club, and parents of applicable cellists will be contacted directly about this exciting opportunity.

Chess Club takes place every week throughout the year. We play in a relaxed environment and pupils of any standard are welcome. Children are matched with similar standard players and are given individual advice to help improve their play. The house chess championship is a keenly contested event at the end of each year!

In Code Crackers club the pupils are introduced to the basics of programming; selecting objects, making sequences and loops in order to create their own code. They will have the opportunity to play programming games and use cool coding apps such as ‘Beebot’ and ‘Daisy the Dinosaur’.

This club is a lunchtime session to play a curated selection of online games, in a safe and organised environment. It is suitable for Year 3 and 4 pupils who want to have fun playing online games together, while developing a range of skills including collaboration, problem solving, creativity and strategic thinking.

Can you build a tower taller than a teacher? Can you help Paddington Bear to cross a river? Each week in this club the children will be invited to complete a new building challenge, using construction toys and teamwork!

Viewers of ‘Countdown’, the ever popular Channel 4 daytime word and number quiz show, will know of its addictive qualities. Once you have started to find the longest words possible from a combination of 9 vowels and consonants, solve number problems from 6 randomly selected numbers or tried to solve the 9 letter conundrum, you will have word and number patterns spinning through your head. And it has very positive benefits for spelling, vocabulary and mental maths. Stefan will host and manage proceedings as the Junior Countdowners in the club try to solve each round following the same format as the TV programme.

Craft Club is for anyone who wants some extra creativity with wood, textiles or plastics – the tasks are variable and always exciting!

Pupils will focus on the process of creating contemporary artwork rather than just the outcome, exploring modern ways of experimenting with a wide range of unusual materials, as well as more regular art processes; such as card sculpture, photography, 3D building and painting.

Art Scholarship candidates are encouraged to attend if possible to add a deeper breadth to portfolios.

We play a range of fixtures against other schools and ensure that all children get to represent the school from Years 3-8 in matches.

A variety of cricket Other Half activities run throughout the school and are coached by staff within the sports department. Sessions are aimed at any pupil who would like to practise and improve their cricket, furthering the skills learnt during sports lessons. All sessions are designed to be fun and help develop a passion for the sport.

Cricket Nets run in a variety of guises through the school all year round. The pupils will hone their batting, bowling and fielding skills with drills, net sessions and fun games utilising the excellent facilities, including the bowling machine and video analysis.

Would you like to become a great cricketer and have lots of fun? If so, this club is for you! We will learn the fundamental skills needed to play cricket and improve on those that we already have, this will be through playing a variety of small team games and paired activities. There is also an opportunity to brush up on the rules and guidelines, so listening carefully and following instructions will be key!

There is a rich tradition of cross country throughout the Abingdon Foundation.

Pupils at Abingdon Prep School have the opportunity to participate in cross country running in PE, Games and our Other Half programme. The cross country club is inclusive and friendly and is one of the most popular choices amongst our pupils.

Values such as teamwork, determination, resilience and commitment are developed, as well as an understanding of how to maintain a healthy body and mind through movement.

For the more competitive, pupils have the opportunity to compete at a local, regional and national level, where we have had a number of impressive performances.

Each week a different issue is debated, with two speakers speaking in favour of a motion and two speakers speaking against. There are also opportunities to speak and ask questions ‘from the floor’. Recent motions have concerned Britain’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis, Britain’s membership of the European Union and the industrial action taken by junior doctors.

Design, create and innovate club is a great opportunity for any budding designers to build on their DT and problem solving skills, using a range of materials and processes. The young designers will be set monthly briefs and challenges such as ‘making a usable pencil case from rubbish’ or ‘create a board game to help year 3 learn their times tables’. In our exciting new DT space, the designers will get to explore and hone their skills while having great fun.

Dip, Dodge, Duck, Dive and Dodge again… the 5 Ds of Dodgeball.

It is a fast game that demands lightening reactions and unparalleled teamwork. This sport requires fast minds and even faster bodies!

Come along and make the most of our woodland as the perfect setting for drama games and performances as we move around different areas creating scenes as we go.

Scholarship Drama is a Year 8 invitation only club that will run for those who are planning on taking a Drama Scholarship in 2022 or have shown a keen interest in this subject for several years. The club will involve improvisational activities, studying plays, watching productions and general dramatic skills.

Dungeons & Dragons is the world’s most popular tabletop roleplaying game. It is a cooperative, storytelling game where you and other players take on the roles of different characters within a story. One player, known as the Dungeon Master (DM), creates a world filled with deadly monsters, intrigue and (of course) treasure! Together, the players roll dice to solve mysteries, fight creatures, explore worlds whilst trying to “level-up” in order to become stronger, wiser and more powerful. D&D is an open-ended game and while the goal of many games is to score the most points or win, the ultimate goal of D&D is to tell a story. As you play, your character will make friends and enemies, fight monsters, discover loot, and complete quests. Join our new Y8 Dungeon Master on the exciting quests you will be set.

You will kick off the season by selecting and drafting your first team. Led by our flute teacher Emme Bains, this group will explore the Flute Chamber Music repertoire across a variety of genres whilst building technical, ensemble and performance skills. Football is a very popular sport at APS with all children from Years 3-8 representing the school in matches. Additional clubs are designed to allow players of all abilities to further their skills and develop their understanding of match play and tactics, with enjoyment of the sport being at the heart of each session.

Each Friday we will try different fun, relaxing activities and games to unwind from a busy week of learning. Our Funtime Friday club will include everything from yoga and team games to jigsaws and mindfulness colouring.

Come and put your geographical knowledge to the test in our exciting club. We will be practising for the Oxfordshire Geographical Association World Wise Quiz in the Autumn term – an entertaining University Challenge style quiz against other local schools where pupils compete in teams of three. The format is very broad with different rounds drawing on UK knowledge, mapwork, flags, fieldwork, Google Earth, current affairs and physical geography. An opportunity for you to extend your knowledge and have fun with your friends.

A fun session based around movement and games. Anything goes as long as we move. It might be team games, games with equipment, yoga and relaxation, moving to the groove or even walking in places we haven’t ever discovered before. Bring your water bottle and get ready to GOOOOO!

Are you looking for a bit of Friday afternoon fun? Glorious Games could be exactly what you need to end the busy week with. All screens are off limits for this opportunity to explore board games, mini team games, learn some card games or become a master puzzler… or even design your own game. Come along!

Go is a strategy board game that has been played for thousands of years. It has simple rules but takes a lifetime to master. In the club you’ll learn the rules, have a go at some puzzles and play games against each other.

Pupils are taught by golf coaches from the JD Golf Academy. During sessions they learn the fundamentals needed to play golf as well as a range of shots to use on the golf course in a fun, active learning environment. No matter what age or golfing ability the aim is to help build confidence and help develop golfers for the future.

Paul Wisby runs this ensemble. Whenever they play in end of term concerts, they always manage to inspire more pupils to take up the instrument.

Have you ever wanted to have a go at lots of different new sports to see if you like them? Have a go sport is the perfect club for you. You will get to try some exciting new sports you won’t learn in PE or Games including netball, baseball, softball and Danish longball. You will be shown how to play and have great fun with your friends as you learn.

Hockey club has an emphasis on fun and aims to introduce children to the game. They will work on stick skills, both reverse and open side, passing movement and will start to look at some 3D skills too. A range of drills will reinforce match play situations in both attack and defence.

If you would like to learn some hockey skills, play mini games and are prepared to listen and learn, then come along to hockey skills club! We’ll cover the basics using lighter sticks and balls and without the need for gumshields and shin pads so that when you get to Year 3 you can hit the ground running (or dribbling, pushing or dodging)! We will have lots of fun and work hard with skills, drills and games to get you started on your hockey journey.

Each weekly session will focus on hands-on science experiments that help build scientific enquiry, investigation skills and encourage a love of science. Using the children’s own questions as stimulus the experiments may vary. From exploring how an egg could bounce to making magnetic slime, we will discover the wonders of science and try to find answers to some of our big questions.

This is an exciting, action packed club in which the pupils are put into teams and play indoor football simply for fun. Four teams are formed early in the term, and each week points are available in league matches, along with internal transfers at various intervals aimed to keep the competition fresh.

Pupils looking to stay active during the winter months will have the opportunity to take to the court and participate in basketball, volleyball and dodgeball. If you are looking to have some fun whilst honing your hand eye coordination skills, this is the club for you.

This group is led by our jazz specialist, Simon Currie. They play anything from The Pink Panther to the James Bond theme and many blues pieces. They are always a popular item in the school concerts, and the audience love to clap along.

Pupils will develop a passion for food and will equip themselves with the skills to feed themselves healthily, with simple ingredients and enthusiasm! Each week we will be making something delicious to take home (if it makes it that far!) from tasty cheese and veggie pinwheel snacks to creatively crafted and delicious cupcakes. Sessions are run by Kate who is the owner of Cakes by Desire. Her speciality is cake art and as a trained Primary school teacher she aims to develop pupils’ love of cooking to find their inner chef.

A club for Pokemon enthusiasts to come along to not only battle with their cards, but design and create their very own Pokemon and cards to be used in club battles! The club will be a mixture of designing, creating, battling and sharing our own Pokemon World stories. Please note: this is not a space for trading.

Junior Teacher provides the pupils with an exciting opportunity to be in charge for a session! Pupils can sign up to teach their peers a skill or an interest. Ranging from learning some phrases in a new language, a card trick, cartoon drawing or all about karate – the choice is yours. Supported by a member of staff, this is an opportunity to learn leadership skills and learn something new from your friends. There is no need to sign up for this club and pupils can choose whether to attend a session each week or not.

In this club, we will be looking at free writing for enjoyment. Every week we will tackle a new genre such as poetry, descriptive writing, stories and newspaper articles. The idea is that the pupils can write for pleasure and can be creative, producing pieces of written work that they might not normally be able to within school.

Have you ever played the plant pot or made your own guitar from things you find lying around? In Junkyard Music we will make our own instruments by recycling everyday materials then learning to play them with our friends to create our own music.

The main aim of “Just Dance” is to explore the freedom of movement that dance unlocks. We shall be using video tutorials to learn routines, as well as spending some time learning specific movements that help us to develop our skills. This is an amateur club for the novice dancer where the aim is to have fun.

Seniors

Singing is such an important part of any developing musician’s skillset. If you can stand up in front of your peers and sing, you can stand up in front of anyone and do anything. Karaoke Club is a fun way to let off some steam. We will sing songs that you want to sing together as a group. For those feeling brave (nobody will ever be put on the spot unless they want to be), you can even sing as a soloist in true karaoke style! Emphasis will be very much on having fun. All abilities and music tastes welcome.

Juniors

Recent studies have shown that singing is amazing for the cognitive development of children. It allows them to access language and concepts that speaking alone doesn’t achieve at an early age. Karaoke also improves reading skills in a fun and engaging way. Pupils will sing age appropriate songs as part of a group and any that feel brave can even have a go at singing as a soloist in true karaoke style. This will be a light-hearted, confidence building club, and the main aim is to have fun!

Lego Club is open to pupils in the Junior Section (Years 3-4). In a relaxed and comfortable setting the children are given freedom to design and build a variety of models. These types of activities encourage lots of interaction and role play; an important ingredient in a technological society.

Grab your aprons and get baking in our new Year 3 & 4 cooking club. Each week we will test out a new recipe – whipping up everything from chunky chocolate cookies to extra-cheesy scones and brilliant blueberry muffins! On your marks, get set, bake!

Ever wondered how to change a plug, mend a puncture, fold a shirt, sew on a button, use a washing machine, wrap a present, change the oil in a car, polish your shoes, boil an egg… or just simply be a helpful hand around the house. If so, ‘life skills’ is the club for you.

Why not learn some new sewing skills whilst making your very own Sock Monster? You could turn an old football sock into a Monster Superhero or turn an everyday sock into a multi-eyed monster from the deep. All your need to do is to bring along an old sock and plenty of imagination to have fun with your friends.

Pupils from Years 3 up to Year 8 can meet and work with Yi Zhang, who teaches Mandarin at Abingdon School, to learn and practise the language and be introduced to the culture of China and other Mandarin-speaking cultures. The club is aimed at beginners or those with a limited knowledge of the target language.

How are you at Kim’s Game? The Shopping List Game? If you would like to have some fun whilst helping your classwork and revision skills, then come along to Memory Skills. We will look at different techniques to aid memory, play games and share ideas to give you tools to apply to your own learning.

Run by our Head of DT, Mini Makers is a chance for Pre-Prep pupils to explore different materials and ways of making. An exciting club for pupils to be creative and have fun as well as building upon their DT skills. Pupils will be given mini projects to make based around their class topics and times of the year and focusing on the different aspects of DT.

Pupils have the opportunity to try out a range of different games, activities and sports. They experience sports which they may not have played before such as hockey and handball. The emphasis of multi sports is to have fun, be active and learn new skills.

Following on from the success of Aural Warriors, this is a fun and light-hearted club, offering an opportunity to develop all aspects of instrumental exam prep, from aural to sight reading, performing and developing listening and analytical skills. Come along for some extra experience ahead of your exam, in a fun and supportive environment.

Open to all levels, whether just starting out, or needing to get through Grade 5 theory to be able to continue with higher level instrument exams. We will be using online apps as well as traditional workbooks and we will be able to enter students for the exams online from here at school when they are ready.

Pivot!’, ‘Sticky, steppy, hoppy!’, ‘Back if you need!’…it must be netball! Come along to learn some simple netball skills and put them into practise in small sided and conditioned games. Even if you have never played netball before, the skills needed help you learn spatial awareness and how to successfully work as part of a team. It’s lots of fun, too!

Have you ever wanted to learn about what it takes to be a journalist in the world of news reporting? Come along to write about the many events, activities and trips taking place at Abingdon Prep. You will also have the opportunity to write about the world’s most important current affairs. The club is perfect if you are inquisitive about real-life stories and relish the opportunity to share your opinions with others through writing.

The Music Department will be open and staffed for your group project work, band rehearsals and private practice.

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding. It helps you to develop your fine motor skills and concentration. Come and master the basic folds and learn to make origami animals, birds, ninja stars, water bombs and many more.

The aim of Coding Club is to introduce children in Years 5-6 to understanding and writing code. Leading on from using Scratch in lessons, they are given the opportunity to use a programming language called Python. They learn the basic functions of how to create and draw patterns and images by moving the Python Turtle around the screen. By using the coding language, Python, pupils are encouraged in their abilities to pay close attention to detail in order to debug their code, as well as using their own imaginations to develop their code further.

This is an opportunity to use the Abingdon School rifle range. There is a session on Monday for Year 8 pupils who will spend the first term using air rifles and the second and third terms moving onto .22 rifles. The session on Friday is for Year 7 pupils who will spend the first two terms using air rifles before progressing to .22 rifles.

These sessions take place at Abingdon School’s rifle range. Pupils are taken by minibus from APS to Abingdon School and parents need to collect from Abingdon School.

The charge is £75 per pupil per term and a charge of £3.50 per pupil per week to cover transport costs – this will be applied to each pupil’s termly account in arrears. Please note that sign up is for the full year. If a pupil does not wish to continue for the following term, we ask that parents notify the school secretary and that place may then be advertised as available for other pupils in the following term.

We pride ourselves on offering enough rugby teams in each age group for pupils of all abilities to represent the school. We play competitively against other prep schools on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Years 3 and 4) and Wednesdays and some Saturdays (Years 5 – 8) throughout the Michaelmas term.

In most year groups, we also run touch teams who play matches against other schools, for those children who are not as keen on the contact element of rugby.

Pupils use Scratch, a graphical programming language, to learn key coding concepts. They create interactive projects by simply dragging and combining code blocks to make a range of programs, including animations, stories, musical instruments and games.

The Choir sings a range of songs spanning several genres. They perfom at a variety of occasions including the Young Voices concert at the O2 and at numerous school events such as the Carol Service and Summer Concert. The Choir has toured to Germany and Venice and sung in some beautiful churches and Cologne Cathedral. They also raise money for charity by carol singing in Oxford.

Each week we will be making something delicious to take home (if it makes it that far!) from tasty cheese and veggie pinwheel snacks to creatively crafted and delicious cupcakes. Sessions are run by Kate who is the owner of Cakes by Desire. Her speciality is cake art and as a trained Primary school teacher she aims to develop pupils’ love of cooking to find their inner chef.

The charge is £13.50 per session per pupil (which includes all ingredients) and will be applied to each pupil’s termly account in arrears. Please note that this charge is the net charge and VAT of 20% will be applied to this on your school fee bill. The charge inclusive of VAT is £16.20 per session. Please note that a charge for all sessions for the term will be applied regardless of sessions attended unless a pupil has been attending a school generated fixture or event and is unable to attend the activity for that reason.

The Senior Drama Club is for Year 7-8. Over the term, pupils are given the opportunity to experiment with improvisational skills using published scripts from playwrights such as Shakespeare and his more modern contemporaries. This club  is suitable for anyone interested in Drama as well as for those who are considering auditioning for a part in the Senior Production.

Come along and enjoy a relaxed session with friends playing board games or card games. If you have a favourite game please bring it along!

If you want to learn to think and behave like a scientist then come along to our Senior Science club where you will research and complete projects in the quest to gain a Bronze Crest Award.

Pupils have the opportunity to hone their typing skills and speed with the help of rock n roll goats and opera singing hippos courtesy of Dance Mat Typing and set themselves the challenge of working through different skills, culminating in the keyboard ninja challenges. Pupils then progress to Nessy Fingers where they hone their skills, compete in races as they dash around five islands earning nuggets and trophies to be placed on Mount Glory. The real skill is – can you gradually increase your speed so your fingers fly across the keyboard!

Introducing our exciting new venture: the STEAM Club, where innovation meets adventure! Our STEAM Club is the ultimate playground for curious minds, where imagination knows no bounds. This club offers a unique blend of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Through a combination of hands-on activities, critical thinking exercises, and creative projects, pupils will have the opportunity to explore various aspects of these fields. Think building towering spaghetti towers, creating Lego robots, and launching paper airplanes that could rival NASA’s finest. Let’s embark on a creative rollercoaster ride through the world of STEAM.

Come and listen to familiar stories in French and then we will be enjoying a range of games bases on what we have heard. No matter what your level of French, the emphasis is on enjoyment with your friends.

Do you enjoy playing competitive games in a friendly atmosphere? Do you want to try playing some new board games or learn to master some old ones? Come and try your hand at games such as Quoridor, Abalone, Othello, Connect 4 and Brain Master. It will be great fun and also improve your critical thinking skills!

Our 4 lane 12m swimming pool provides the ideal environment to develop swimming technique throughout the year. The majority of the galas are held in the Lent term but we also enter swimmers for the IAPS Regional and National Preparatory Schools’ Championships in both the individual and relay events. It is recommended that the serious swimmers also join the local club which uses the Abingdon School pool.

Prep-Prep Swimming

The Pre-Prep club complements the skills taught during the timetabled lesson and aims to develop individual water confidence, stroke technique, diving activities and some free playtime.

Swimming Years 3-8

The clubs for older pupils welcome swimmers of all abilities and are taught by our qualified and experienced swimming coach. The clubs aim to extend skills and technique and provide a supportive environment in which to do so.

Please note that a charge for all sessions for the term will be applied regardless of sessions attended unless a pupil has been attending a school generated fixture or event and is unable to attend the activity for that reason.

Swimming (Advanced)

The primary aim of this club is to prepare pupils for the IAPS National Swimming, Biathlon and Triathlon championships. Although the aim is to improve stroke technique in all four of the strokes, there will, however, be a particular emphasis on front crawl. Swimmers will improve their starts, turns and finishes to competition level and will also develop both their speed and endurance. This club is aimed at very strong swimmers who will be able to comfortably swim 150 metres and is by invitation only.

Advanced Swimming is not a club which incurs a charge.

Table Tennis has become very popular with all ages at Abingdon Prep. The club has a relaxed atmosphere which enables the children to play games and develop their skills regardless of their experience and capabilities. A great way to end the week at school!

Tennis coaching is provided by a company called ‘Excel Tennis’. They provide high quality coaching with great attention to detail.

There are invitation clubs for Years 5-8 run by the sports department aimed at preparing children for inter house matches. There is no charge for these clubs.

Introduction to Tennis

An opportunity to experience the initial skills involved in tennis, from bouncing balls and catching them to developing racket and ball control in order to complete a mini rally. There is no charge for these sessions.

* Friday sessions are chargeable as the coaching is provided by an external company (Tuesday sessions carry no charge as they are run by APS).

A great way to start your musical instrument journey! Children will learn the techniques to be able to play basic chords and strumming patterns.

Each session focuses on hands-on science experiments which help build scientific enquiry, investigation skills and encourages a love of science. Using the pupils’ own questions as a stimulus the experiments may vary. From exploring how an egg could bounce to making magnetic slime, we discover the wonders of science and try to find answers to some our big questions.

At Warhammer Club the children are introduced to the Warhammer 40k game. They can build and paint their models, or use their completed models to play games against the other pupils.

Water Polo Club gives children the chance to participate in this popular sport. They learn how to tread water, swim with the ball and throw and catch to team mates during drills and games designed to improve their skills. The pupils also learn how to do head up freestyle and head up backstroke in order to always keep their eye on the ball. Each session ends with a match where tactics can be discussed.

The Wind Band is a newly-formed group, open to brass or wind players. We perform ‘classical’ wind band pieces and make an exciting sound!

Woodwork club is open to anyone who wants to practise using some of the woodwork tools. Fun projects are undertaken and vary from a chunky jigsaw to a mosaic coaster. Enjoy creating in a small group to some relaxing music in the DT room.
